Kalkadoon

/kælkəˈdun/ (say kalkuh'doohn)

noun
1. an Australian Aboriginal people from the Cloncurry area, Qld.
2. the language of this people.
adjective
3. of or relating to this people or their language.
Also, Kalkatungu.
Burke and Wills passed through Kalkadoon country in 1861, when they crossed the Cloncurry River, but they had no contact with the people. With the establishment of a port at Burketown on the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1865, white settlers began to move into the area, looking to establish pastoral properties and to find minerals. The Kalkadoon people began to defend their limited supplies of food and water and gained a reputation as warriors. Skirmishes and killings through the 1870s and early 1880s culminated in a major battle in 1884. A force of squatters, farmhands and native police led by Police Sub-Inspector Frederick Charles Urquhart went looking for the Kalkadoon, who took up a defensive position on what is now known as Battle Mountain, between Cloncurry and Kajabbi. Although the Kalkadoon fought fiercely and at one stage seemed to be winning the battle, in the end modern weaponry prevailed. The number of Kalkadoon dead has been estimated at over 200. Kalkadoon people now have a Kalkadoon Tribal Council in Mount Isa. A Tribal Centre and Cultural Keeping Place preserves artefacts, and honours the heritage of the Kalkadoon people.
